Definition

An answer engine is a system that returns one synthesized answer instead of a ranked list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Google AI Overviews are answer engines. DataEase AI measures how brands appear inside those answers.

How is an answer engine different from a search engine?

A search engine returns a ranked list you choose from. An answer engine returns one composed passage naming a few brands. DataEase AI tracks 5 of them, and a page can rank first on Google while being named in none.

That gap is the whole reason this term needs a definition. Ranking and being cited are different outcomes produced by different mechanics. A search engine rewards the page that best matches a query. An answer engine assembles a claim from several sources at once and decides which brands are worth naming inside it, which depends on what third parties have written about you as much as on what your own site says.

The practical consequence is that the winner's circle shrinks. A results page has ten slots and a scroll. An answer names three or four brands and stops. There is no page two of an answer.

Do answer engines send any traffic at all?

Answer engines send far fewer clicks than a blue link, because the answer is the destination. What they send instead is crawlers: one brand we monitor logged roughly 335,000 AI crawler visits in 30 days across 28 tracked bots.

Those crawler logs are the closest thing to a server-side record of answer engine interest. They show which of your pages get fetched, how often each one is recrawled, and which important pages are never fetched at all. That last category, the coverage gap, is usually the most useful finding, because a page an engine has never read cannot be quoted in an answer.
